Professional Liability for New Graduates

New LinkWe are committed to supporting you along every stage of your career!

You’ve worked hard to get here, and we’re honored to support you as you begin your career. Your assets (and future assets) will be covered with an individual professional liability policy when you secure coverage through the AVMA PLIT program. So whether you’re performing relief, emergency, or part-time work in addition to your main employment, you’ll have coverage that protects you wherever you practice.

What you need

Professional Liability: this coverage responds to allegations of veterinary malpractice. The limits refer to the maximum amount of coverage your policy will provide for a single covered malpractice claim (per claim) and for the total amount of covered malpractice claims in one calendar year (aggregate).

Veterinary License Defense: this key endorsement protects your license against actions and complaints filed with state licensing agencies. This includes coverage for legal defense fees.

Special note for newly employed veterinarians: If your employer purchases a professional liability policy from a commercial insurer covering employed veterinarians, this coverage is not in your name and will not follow you if you provide veterinary services outside your employed duties—such as relief, emergency or part-time work. And, it may exclude veterinary license defense coverage. To fully protect yourself, secure a professional liability policy in your name through the PLIT program.

What it costs

Annual professional liability premiums are listed below as per occurrence / annual aggregate. This refers to the maximum amount of coverage your policy will provide for a single covered malpractice claim (per claim) and for the total amount of covered malpractice claims in one calendar year (aggregate). You should select the plan that meets the unique needs of your professional activity.

Your premiums are pro-rated! Coverage renews annually on January 1, which means that after graduation your premium is a pro-rated calculation. So if you initiate coverage this year, you’ll only be charged a portion of the annual premium.
