Karen Wernette, DVM


Dr. Karen Wernette joined the AVMA PLIT on January 2, 2007 as a Trust Representative. In this role, Dr. Wernette speaks to AVMA members insured through the PLIT-sponsored programs, answering questions related to malpractice allegations and practice situations. She also reviews professional liability claims, identify experts and appraisers for claims defense, and advise the insurance broker and underwriters regarding new developments in veterinary medicine. Dr. Wernette visit several colleges of veterinary medicine and represents the PLIT at various veterinary conventions.

When asked why she wanted to join the PLIT, Dr. Wernette responded, “The opportunity to present the importance of the PLIT to students and veterinarians is exciting and personally rewarding. My co-workers are fantastic and I’m excited to be here!”

Dr. Wernette graduated from Michigan State University, College of Veterinary Medicine in 1982 and received a Mid-Management Development Certificate from the University of Wisconsin, School of Business in 1995. After several years in private practice she joined the staff at the American Veterinary Medical Association. During her fourteen years at the AVMA, Dr. Wernette served as an Assistant Director and Director of the Membership and Field Services Division, as well as the Director of the Career Opportunities Center.

Before joining the the PLIT, Dr. Wernette worked part-time in a companion animal practice and served as executive director for the American Veterinary Medical Law Association and the Association of Veterinary Practice Management and Consultants.

Dr. Wernette is an active member of many professional associations including: American Veterinary Medical Association, Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association, Michigan Veterinary Medical Association, American Veterinary Medical Law Association, Association of Veterinary Practice Management and Consultants, and the American Society of Veterinary Medical Association Executives.
